In spring 2020, I started an activity in Tamworth bringing people on easy hikes. It was in response to the pandemic. Though it was a volunteer activity on my part, it was approved and sponsored by the Tamworth Community Nurses Association, a unique organization that offers free medical services to the people of Tamworth, and is known as a model for other communities to adopt around the state and country.
The secretary of the organization at the time, Marletta Maduskie, came up with the perfect name, “Hikes With Friends.” She made up attractive fliers each week, advertising the planned hike for that Saturday or Sunday, with a photo I had previously taken on the hike. I would post them around town. Also I posted the next hike online on the Tamworth Exchange and Sandwich Board, two community notice boards.
Ed’s Walks with Friends got Jim and I and friends through those difficult, confusing early days of the COVID pandemic and beyond. I felt supported even if I was slow, invigorated by the challenges, small and large, and embraced by a community that we were now a year-round part of, Thank you, Ed and Tamworth Nurses,,,.hope you continue for many seasons ahead!
