To the editor:

Four Carroll County state representatives have signed up for support from a dark-money, Texas PAC that wants to do away with Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Unfortunately, our country has a massive federal debt which is now like $35 Trillion dollars, and according to the US Treasury, it is growing at a Trillion dollars every 100 days. What? You can't make this stuff up. Google it.

If people think this is sustainable forever, they must be Democrats.

And unfortunately, most politicians cannot afford to touch the "third rail" and tackle this problem, because you either have to reduce spending or raise taxes, neither of which are palatable and neither of which will find enough fellow political takers to pass. Most politicians want to get reelected.

Unfortunately, it will probably need a drastic reset of our economic system (say, a default on the US debt, or a devaluation of the dollar) to do anything. So some of us are just waiting for this disaster to occur and are amazed that things seem to keep chugging along just fine so far. Some businesses are thriving, stock market is way up, and even inflation is starting to moderate. I have read some Liberal economists who have opined that the federal debt never has to be paid off. Sounds like nonsense, but I guess we will all be surprised when the crash occurs.

Unfortunately, anyone who tries to talk about this will get lambasted by their political opponents. Even Republicans who are for fiscal disciple will hear from former President Trump if they even ask about reforming entitlements like social security.

One thing that is different is that recipients of Social Security have at least paid something into the system and have some claim to benefits.

Unfortunately, when Democrats are in charge, they give out taxpayers funds, benefits, or support to illegal immigrants. Heck, Biden invited millions of people to come and now that they are, he looks bewildered and blames Republicans. Well, I guess he always looks bewildered.

The Democrats have worked hard to remove work requirements for welfare, something President Clinton agreed to to get bipartisan support for his entitlements. We are back to building an entire class of non-workers who are supported by a smaller and smaller working population.

People vote against their own interests. Remember that it was Reagan who spoke out against Social Security and Medicare and signed into law the Social Security tax to offset his tax breaks to the rich. Remember that it was Bush who "borrowed" but never payed back $1.37 trillion of Social Security surplus to pay for his tax cuts to the rich and the disastrous Iraq war. Remember that it was Trump who exploded our debt even before the pandemic by rewarding the top one percent with a tax break windfall.

People who think the Republicans can't exterminate Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid should ask women about Roe vs Wade.
