BERLIN -- The Berlin Daily Sun is adding a weekend paper while reducing its publishing schedule from four days a week to three.
Instead of printing Tuesdays through Fridays, the Sun will print Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The change will start Tuesday, January 7.
According to Sun publisher Mark Guerringue, there will be no other changes. The staff will remain the same as well as editorial coverage.
"Not only will reporting on community news, like government and police, remain the same, but we'll be adding some lighter news on Saturdays," he said.
Berlin Daily Sun Managing Editor Barbara Tetreault said the Berlin staff is looking forward to the opportunity to do a weekend paper and feature some of the people and activities that make the area special.
"The paper has always been very strong in hard news. We hope to add more feature stories and photographs as well as hiking and outdoor columns," Tetreault said.
For breaking news, she said, readers can go to the Berlin Daily Sun website at www.berlindailysun.com.
Guerringue said the paper will remain free, and distributed at the same locations it always has.
He said the change is both a cost savings measure and an opportunity to do something different.
"It's no secret that while the future of Berlin looks bright, the economy still struggles," he said. "The turnaround in the economy has been slower than we expected and we just need to tweak the paper a little to make it work financially."
He said it's unusual for an area as small as Berlin-Gorham to have a daily paper, so even in the best of economic times operating a daily is a challenge. "Publishing three days a week is a better fit for the size of the market," Guerringue said.
