David P. Paulson 79, of Eden Prairie, Minn., passed away on Friday, May 12, 2017.
David was born June 13, 1937 in Estherville, Iowa, the son of Chester and Pearl (Bonstead) Paulson, and grew up on a farm by Wallingford, Iowa.
He graduated high school in Estherville, Iowa, in 1955 and from Iowa State University with a degree in industrial engineering in 1959.
David married LeAnn Twito of Estherville, Iowa, in 1959, and had two children, Nancy (1961) and Steve (1964).
David started as an engineer with Marathon Corp. He held many different jobs with what eventually, through mergers and acquisitions, became the American Can Company, quickly advancing to plant manager. He worked for this company, which changed ownership and names a few more times, throughout his 42-year career. David retired from what was then known as Georgia Pacific in 2002. He was an effective and honest leader who was always respectful of those he supervised. As he was once quoted “The secret to working with people is to observe the Golden Rule."
His career required multiple moves across North America, including Wisconsin (four times), California, Georgia, Connecticut (two times), Toronto, New Hampshire, and Arkansas. In addition to the adventure of exploring new locales these moves had the benefit of creating a nationwide network of close friends that David valued and maintained throughout his life. He eventually retired to Mesa, Ariz. (winters) and Eden Prairie, Minn. (summers).
David was very active in his faith, serving on church councils and as president of several congregations. He taught Sunday school, and regularly attended adult bible classes. He was also very involved in community organizations, including the Rotary Club, Elks Lodge, Chamber of Commerce and United Way, and he helped to provide computers to a local technical school.
Outside of his work and community pursuits, David enjoyed many activities with friends and family, especially golf, bowling, hunting, fishing, painting and cards. He and LeAnn traveled throughout North America as well as to Bermuda and Europe. They traveled to the Masters Golf Tournament and were able to attend both a summer and winter Olympics. David was very much a family man, making sure that his family frequently returned to their Iowa roots to visit relatives on both sides of the family. David loved children, and was an exceptional father and grandfather.
David is survived by the love of his life, his wife LeAnn, daughter Nancy (John), son Steve (Laurie), granddaughters Hannah Pelegano and Erin Paulson, and grandson Benjamin Pelegano. David is preceded in death by his parents, Chet and Pearl, and his brother, Wayne Paulson.
